New Year's Ritual - PART ONE

New Year's Ritual - PART ONE

Happy New Year!

2020 is over. Think anything will actually change?

Here's something I know; The only thing we have the power to change is ourselves and how we react to what's around us.

So, what can we do to set ourselves up to have an amazing year?

This year I was inspired to create a New Year's ritual. It's very relaxed. I don't think it matters exactly when you do it. I did some yesterday (but you could do that part today, or next week, whatever) and I am doing some more today and over the weekend and maybe some more next week.

Here's how it goes:

(you will need a pen, journal or notepad, and whatever device you keep your photos on)

First, we reflect on the year that is ending/over. I opened up my photos on my computer (you can use your phone, ipad, wherever you keep photos) and scrolled back to January 2020. You can do this alone or with your partner or kids or both or whatever. The only rule for this is to enjoy it. Play nice music, be comfortable, have a cup of tea or a glass of wine and smile.

As you look over each month, notice what you want to celebrate that happened.

Here are some examples that I found:

"January - Created a really cool Golden Globes ballot using my Canva skills!"

"March - Made an amazing Italian Wedding Soup!"

"August - Cecelia climbed Mount Katahdin!"

This process is really fun because you may find that some amazing things happened that you forgot about or just filed away in the back of your brain.

Write them down in your journal or a pad.

As you do this, you might find things that you want more of. Write those down too. I wrote "more celebrations" after seeing the amazing Star Wars birthday cake we made for Nick in March. We showed it to him on Zoom but he never got to eat it 😂. The making of the cake and the Zoom celebration was so much fun, it didn't matter.

As you go through the months, also notice if any feelings come up that you would like to say good-bye to.

Here are a couple of mine, for example;

"Comparing myself to others and feeling inadequate."

"The story that winter is always depressing."

Write these on a separate piece of paper, one that you can throw away.

When you get to the end of the year, think about whether there was a theme... I just wrote in huge letters "ABUNDANCE".

When you can, read over the things you want to let go of and then crumple up the paper and destroy it. You can throw in a fire, tear it up into tiny pieces or just trash it and say "PEACE OUT, YO!"
